I regret to inform you that after consulting with our Woodland Park Kids Club staff and public health officials, we’ve made the decision to cancel the Kids Club program due to low enrollment and continued concerns over the spread of COVID-19.
While we know this is very disappointing to our families, especially our kids, please understand that our planning was based upon a survey conducted in the beginning of June in which nearly 150 families responded that they would participate. As of today, we are only at 40 children registered. Due to the cost of the program, which was intentionally kept low ($295, less than $4 per hour), as well as staffing costs and recent positive COVID-19 cases that have impacted other camps in New Jersey, this was the only possible decision.
There are few Borough programs that I value more than our summer camp. Having been a camper, counselor, director, and chair of the Recreation & Community Relations Committee when I served as a Councilman, camp is near and dear to my heart. This was a hard, but necessary decision. And, we held out as long as we could to encourage additional enrollment.
We look forward to next summer when we hope to provide our traditional 7-week summer camp program, as we have for decades before this. On behalf of our Recreation Department, the Council and I apologize for any inconvenience.
